The chief attraction of this release by the Ensemble Aedes choir (named for Greek bardic poets, not for the malaria-carrying mosquito) and players from the historical-instrument group Les Siècles is the presence of the 1919 version of Stravinsky's Les Noces, which was left unfinished by Stravinsky and not performed until 1981, conducted by Pierre Boulez. It is heard here in a completion by Theo Verbey, and it is quite effective. Stravinsky apparently imagined the work in this form but encountered technical problems with the pianola, here realized digitally, and the two cimbaloms. The realized results give the work a steely edge, demanding absolute tempo consistency from the musicians because of the mechanical nature of the pianola, and what listeners hear is a fascinating mix of the primitivism of Les Noces with the nascent world of electronic instruments. One can imagine an audience for this recording beyond classical circles, in the realm of electronica. The only real downside is the attempt to bring Ravel's Bolero into this orbit. It is transcribed for the same combination of forces, choir, pianola, and ensemble, but Bolero is a different kind of work, and the vocalized syllables of the choir will be, to some ears, a bit risible. One's mileage may vary, of course, and in any event, this will be a revelatory Les Noces for many hearers.
