That voice. Leslie Stevens evokes the purity of Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell and Victoria Williams without blatantly aping those greats. Her specialty is dusty, sunny L.A.-canyon country, comfortably removed from Nashville's polish, and her third album feels at once nostalgic and fresh. Opener "Storybook" is classic '70s folk, all warm, rolling piano and finger-picked-guitar. There are shades of Mazzy Star in molasses-slow beauty "You Don't Have To Be So Tough" and the title track — on which Stevens' voice seems to actually shimmer and ripple unpredictably like water. "12 Feet High" is a highlight, a rollicking good time that belies the theme of drowning in the troubles and mundanities of life; likewise, the jaunty "Depression, Descent," about a relationship gone wrong at the holidays. On that song, and others — including the Western gallop "The Tillman Song" — pedal steel almost acts as a mournful, inebriated duet partner to Stevens' bell-clear stylings. And when she ascends to the epic ending of "Sylvie," it's breathtaking. © Qobuz
