O início da década de 80 foi uma das épocas menos propícias para o rock progressivo, mas o Marillion foi corajoso e se aventurou no gênero mesmo assim, lançando o álbum de estreia em 1982, intitulado Script for a Jester's Tear. Naquela altura, ninguém poderia imaginar que, em meio à explosão do synthpop e das músicas mais despretensiosas, esse seria o começo de uma nova onda progressiva. A banda acenou ao passado, com influências do Pink Floyd e do Genesis na época de Peter Gabriel. Com a teatralidade do vocalista Fish, guitarras com sabor de anos 70 e teclados múltiplos, a banda resgatou a tendência do passado. Mas ela não soou meramente revivalista, trazendo essas influências com um senso de urgência pertinente aos anos 80, já que trouxe letras totalmente adequadas para a era pós-punk e new wave, com críticas às classes financeiras altas e empatia com trabalhadores.
