Following on logically from the album Musas, which took the 2017 Latin Grammy for best folk album, Musas 2 is set for success. A young icon of Mexican song, Natalia Lafourcade is pursuing a refreshing re-reading of pan-American heritage. The tone is set with the opening track. A convincing cross of Mexican ranchera and salsa, Danza de Gardenias, co-signed by David Aguilar Dorantes, is one of the brand-new pieces written for the album by Natalia Lafourcade. The rest of the album hurls us into a golden age of Latin American song. A good and well-deserved part of the album is given to Mexican songs, and Natalia Lafourcade tackles the great writers delicately (Álvaro Carrillo, Maria Grever and Alberto Dominguez) and also serves up traditional songs, like the immortal La Llorona.
To be sure of getting the ear of her muses (musas), Natalia Lafourcade has summoned Los Macorinos, the magical guitarists Miguel Peña and Juan Carlos Allende, who accompanied the great Chavela Vargas in later years. Moving further afield, Natalia Lafourcade gives a memorable version of Duerme Negrito, a classic from the Venezuelan-Colombian border, immortalised by the Argentines Atahualpa Yupanqui and Mercedes Sosa. She visits the Peru of Óscar Avilés and sails as far as Cuba, to sing Eclipse by Margarita Lecuona and to take on board another legend, Omara Portuondo (Buena Vista Social Club) to make a trio which is completed by her compatriot Eugenia León, on Desdeñosa, which is emblematic of the Vargas repertoire. But don't be fooled: nostalgia is not at the heart of this album. Anchored in tradition as they might be, these songs, which for the most part flowered in the years 1930-1940, have found a new youth thanks to the clear and sensitive singing of Natalia Lafourcade and the arrangements in delicate pastel colours, if not new life altogether.
