Cinco anos e três semanas. Este é o período entre os álbuns DAMN. e Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, de Kendrick Lamar. É difícil imaginar o maior rapper da atualidade voltando com total simplicidade. Este quinto álbum é surpreendentemente denso, tanto em conteúdo quanto em forma. Mostra a elevada espiritualidade de seu autor, uma complexidade americana, mais uma vez, o que significa ser negro e icônico nos Estados Unidos. A produção, profundamente infundida com o som do Sounwave, é arrojada, versátil, certamente mais complexa e experimental do que em seus álbuns anteriores. O californiano decidiu expressar os humores pessoais que explorou em DAMN. e vinculá-los à história sombria dos Estados Unidos em To Pimp A Butterfly. Há um processo de pensamento linear que acompanha momentos de atuação magnífica, como o dueto com Taylour Paige, We Cry Together, que representa uma briga de casal violenta; também a melódica Puple Hearts com Summer Walker e Ghostface Killah; ou ainda a calma e serena leitura do diário de sua tia em Auntie Diaries... Nenhum artista da TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) é apresentado neste álbum. Kendrick Lamar preferiu deixar um lugar para Baby Keem e Kodak Black. O Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers transborda e é um corte acima da concorrência. Ele contém sua parcela de violência, lágrimas e esperanças, sua parcela de contradições e perambulação pessoal.
