Seventeen years after conducting the Polish Radio and Television Choir in Krakow, and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in a more than enjoyable recording of Lutoslawski's Twenty Polish Christmas Carols for Naxos, Antoni Wit is back with the same programme accompanied by musicians and choristers of the National Music Forum in Wroclaw (Breslau in German) under his baton. This new cultural institution, which sprung up in 2015, seemed to be the perfect setting for recording the works of Lutoslawski, a national treasure and considered, along with Karol Szymanoswki, to be the greatest Polish composer since Chopin.


Originally composed for piano and soloist in 1946 after 19th-century folk songs, the composer orchestrated these Christmas Carols almost forty years later. If we could already trust Antoni Wit in his interpretation of Lutoslawski's score - the conductor has made a solid reputation for himself defending the Polish composer - this new version definitely marks an increase in pitch and poise compared to the one from 2005. You will particularly appreciate the care given to the prosody, to the scansion of the choristers, all benefiting from the optimal acoustic conditions at the National Music Forum. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
