This second edition of Lovestruck, the first single from Madness' 20th anniversary reunion album Wonderful, is more appealing than the first version -- at least, for anyone with a computer. It contains an "enhanced video" segment that can be played on most computers. Unlike the enhanced videos on the Johnny the Horse single and the box set The Lot, however, this is not the official video for the song. Rather, it is a sort of "behind-the-scenes" look at the photo shoots that produced the art direction for the album jacket, which is a little voyeuristic and more than a little boring, but it still beats the pants off the medley of album tracks offered on the first edition of the single. There is also a respectable B-side, "We are Love," written and sung by Carl "Cathal" Smyth. The song has a harder rock edge than most Madness tunes and is stylistically reminiscent of the 1988 Smyth-led spin-off attempt The Madness. As for "Lovestruck," its release was a major event in pop music history. Besides being the first new Madness single since "Waiting for the Ghost Train" in 1986 and their first Top Ten hit since "The Sun and the Rain" in 1983, it also marked a return to peak form for one of the premiere singles bands in two decades of British pop. "Lovestruck" is an intoxicatingly catchy pop tune in the vein of early-'80s Madness songs like "Our House" or "Sun and the Rain."
