Listeners will enjoy hearing the music of this historical soprano saxophonist and clarinetist much more than they would relish picking through the maze of his discography. Blue Note has released many Bechet albums, some of them part of a series of volumes, some not. This is the second volume of one particular series, but jumps all over the place as if it were a history unto itself, covering more than a decade of recording and featuring a parade of well-known players from this style of jazz. Everything about the music is wonderful, with Bechet's slurpy saxophone over it all like a rainbow. On his other horn, the clarinet, Bechet gets a chance to match licks with Albert Nicholas on a popping version of "Old Stack O'Lee Blues."
