The young Welsh-born composer Huw Watkins has gained lots of attention for an attractive and distinctive style that combines neo-Romantic, what might be called neo-Impressionist, and virtuoso elements in a coherent, compact whole. Watkins is a fine orchestrator, and works like the Symphony heard here could easily be programmed by orchestras outside Britain. But the highlight here is the opening Flute Concerto, brilliantly mastered by London Symphony Orchestra principal flutist Adam Walker. It is an extraordinary piece of virtuoso writing. Sample around in the second and third movements, with the evanescent trailing flute figures in the slow movement and the almost percussive use of the flute in the finale, all without benefit of extended technique. Watkins collaborated with Walker in the shaping of the music, and the concerto stands as a superb example of such collaboration. The violin concerto, featuring Alina Ibragimova as soloist, is also a well-realized piece of solo writing. This is something of a sampler of Watkins' recent music; several different orchestras and conductors are present, but a unified voice is apparent. Anyone interested in new music for the flute will find this essential listening.
