As part of the Brooklyn-based trio Black Dice, Eric Copeland had a significant hand in the early millennial union of experimental noise and psychedelic sensibilities. HERMAPHRODITE continues this unique vision with a collection of loopy and adventurous headphone candy that combines Brian Eno's mid-'70s sonic gymnastics with Animal Collective's non-traditional ideas of structure--fittingly, the album was released on the Collective's Paw Tracks label. While there is very little that indicates that this is structured music at all, HERMAPHRODITE is a compelling listen with enough beauty, humor, and musicality to hook the faint of heart. Beautiful, mysterious stuff.
