Surgida em 1976 e de grande pertinência em várias cenas musicais underground, The Cure já tinha diversas coletâneas lançadas quando Greatest Hits veio à tona em 2001. Entretanto, ela é bem diferente das demais coleções já lançadas. O tom sombrio do início da carreira da banda raramente aparece no álbum. Em vez disso, ouvimos majoritariamente os clássicos da banda que obtiveram extremo sucesso comercial em meados da década de 80, ou seja, um The Cure um pouco mais alegre e assimilável para o grande público, como em "In Between Days", "Boys Don't Cry" e "Just Like Heaven".
