In his offbeat crooner clothes, Alex Cameron is hot stuff! For his second album, the improbable Australian turns out to be more and more charming. A sort of spiritual dandy son of Bryan Ferry and David Bowie, he juggles with melodies that are rooted in the 80s, punctuated by Roy Molloy’s sparkling saxophone, cheesy synthesizers as we like them and springy drums. He might well caress the edges of kitsch (Runnin' Outta Luck evokes the darted pants, the oversized brushing and the bellowed spencers), this Forced Witness always lands on its feet in the end. It’s worth noting that Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado (for the production), The Killers’ Brandon Flowers and, for a duet, the troubling Angel Olsen came to help Cameron with the organization of his rather exhilarating decadent party. In short, if Nick Cave is the Australian black and grey crooner, Alex Cameron is without a doubt his technicolored version! © CM/Qobuz
