Everything is a spoken-word recording of a chapter from Henry Rollins' book Eye Scream. Unlike most of his spoken-word albums, which are essentially long, rambling, and funny monologs, Everything is a recitation that intends to be somewhat important. Throughout the album, Rollins recites fairly awkward poetry over a minimalist, beatnik jazz backdrop provided by Charles Gayle and Rashied Ali. Rollins has a terrific sense of detail and humor, which is normally evident in his prose and monologs. In his poetry, he becomes clumsy and humorless -- his clear, simple sentences don't have as much power when they're delivered in stanzas. Furthermore, the jazz bleatings in the background seep into the forefront too often, becoming a major annoyance by the time the album is halfway over. In a way, it's easy to admire Rollins' intentions with Everything, but the final result is ultimately too tedious and misdirected to take very seriously.
