Prince passou boa parte dos anos 80 agradando ao público pop, mas perdeu sua base de fãs do R&B. Como resposta a esse movimento, ele criou o grupo New Power Generation e gravou Diamond and Pearls (1991), seu primeiro álbum a se reconectar com as músicas urbanas desde 1999 (1982). É nítido como ele reconhece a ascensão do hip-hop e se inspira em artistas como N.W.A, Public Enemy e A Tribe Called Quest, o que resulta em canções mais pesadas e alguns raps cantados pelo vocalista Tonio M. Como sempre, Prince se entrega totalmente às suas invenções cheias de movimentos eróticos, grooves dançantes e influências do jazz, aproveitando toda a habilidade da nova banda.
