After a lengthy break in politics, Wyclef Jean returned to music in February 2017 with J’ouvert, which borrowed its title from the great street party celebrating Caribbean culture during the Carnival. The right decision from the former Fugees member who, now 47 years old, knows all about the consequences of a total political commitment and describes them in a new version of If I Was President: “If I was President, I'd get elected on Friday, assassinated on Saturday, buried on Sunday, they go back to work on Monday…” J’ouvert was, more than anything, a reflection of its inspired author, mixing rap, reggae, folk, soul and Caribbean music, an artist just as comfortable crossing swords with young rising stars (like Young Thug) or revisiting a classic like Jacques Brel’s Ne me quitte pas. Barely enough time to fully digest these ten titles, and Wyclef returned seven months later with Carnival III: The Fall And Rise Of A Refugee, a “true” album this time, as an ode to all of his musical values: discovery, diversity, artisticity, etc. The ex-Fugees’ cocktail is just as delicious and his fusion of styles still as masterful. It’s also worth noting that Emeli Sandé (Carry On), LunchMoney Lewis (What Happened To Love) and the former new jack swing star, Teddy Riley (Trapicabana), are all involved on the album. © CM/Qobuz
