Two mid-'60s albums that show Coates during the height of her crusade for salvation and at the high tide of her hopes for creating "the beloved community" of the civil rights movement as a direct outgrowth of Christian faith, as reflected in such songs as "The Righteous on the March," "Step By Step," and "Now I'm Ready." She has described her mission as "writing about a changing condition, a changing world," and often, her lyrics and delivery ("I'm sort of a hedge and highway singer") reflect exactly that. The liner notes are good as to commentary, completely confusing as to who sings what -- they credit Coates as the lead singer on 16 tracks, no lead singer for "Is Your All on the Altar," the debut track and one of the best, and lead vocals by others on 16 tracks -- although listeners will have little trouble figuring out which are sung by Coates with nothing more than their ears.
