While there is not now, never has been, and never could be a single disc that encompasses what might be characterized as "Ferruccio Busoni's Greatest Hits," this disc by Roland Pontinen comes as close as any disc is ever likely to come in fulfilling that role. First of all, many of Busoni's greatest hits are on the disc: the exhilarating All'italia, the hilarious Turandots Frauengemach, the exciting Perpetuum mobile, the solemn Berceuse, the serious Nach Mozart Adagio, and the astounding Prelude & Etude en arpeges. Second of all, they are performed with incredible technique and unbelievable virtuosity by Roland Pontinen: his performances have all the strength and sensitivity needed to project Busoni's music and he does it all seemingly without breaking a sweat. And third, Pontinen's performances have been captured in CPO's clear, crisp sound so that every tiny detail and every massive sonority are captured. So while this disc is not "Ferruccio Busoni's Greatest Hits," it is the best single-disc introduction to Busoni's piano music now available.
