The Boulevard des Italiens is a street in Paris, close to several major theaters. The street lends its name to this sophomore Deutsche Grammophon release by tenor Benjamin Bernheim, with excellent support from the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna under Frédéric Chaslin, which offers arias in French by Italian composers. The phenomenon involved was so integral to 19th century opera in general that it's a bit surprising nobody has tried such a program before. Bernheim opens and closes with Puccini numbers that were translated into French and performed that way in the early 20th century. That might seem not in the spirit of the thing, but Bernheim nails these, and it is worth the reminder that translated opera used to be much more common than it is today. In between are a century's worth of pieces written by Italian composers for the French stage. This has the advantage of bringing in Spontini and Cherubini, key developers of the trend who aren't so often played; sample Bernheim's crackerjack "Qu'ai-je vu!... Julia va mourir!" from Spontini's La Vestale. Verdi and Donizetti, who worked in French opera over several decades, are present, and Bernheim moves forward in time to Pietro Mascagni's Amica, also not a terribly common item. Bernheim was already an exciting young singer with a remarkably relaxed top range, and here, he adds programming intelligence to his list of virtues.
