After spending the Good Things album cycle tinkering with sounds residing on the margins of the country-pop mainstream, Dan + Shay come running back to their wheelhouse on Bigger Houses. Polished until it gleams, the record is filled with big melodies delivered gently; even when the duo harmonize on a mountain of guitars, as they do on "Save Me the Trouble," the proceedings never seem loud or ugly. The cleanliness of the execution means there's nothing preventing Dan + Shay from indulging in sticky sentimentality on the album, a trait that's as evident in their arrangements as it is in their lovelorn lyrics. They may sing about "Breakin' Up with a Broken Heart," but there's no trace of sadness on Bigger Houses: it's all sweetness and light, music meant to reassure, music meant to meet expectations and nothing more.
