Nathaniel Rateliff tinha uma carreira como compositor acústico de indie folk, mas se reinventou em 2015 com a banda Night Sweats, adotando o soul retrô em parceria com o amigo e produtor Richard Swift e atingindo o sucesso comercial com o hit "S.O.B". Após dois álbuns com o conjunto, o divórcio com a esposa e a morte de Swift, Rateliff retornou à carreira solo em 2020 com And It's Still Alright. O disco soa como um tributo ao amigo, em um exercício de exame sobre o amor e a morte, se encaixando com as sonoridades introspectivas e acústicas do artista. Suas características antigas se renovaram com a confiança adquirida na fase Night Sweats, o que gera um contraste rico com a introspecção, em uma dualidade expressada também na temática dos altos e baixos da vida.
