This recording by The Sixteen and its director Harry Christophers focuses on one of their standard composers, William Byrd, together with his contemporaries, composers who inspired him (Philip van Wilder's chanson O doux regard, from which the album title seems to be derived), and two pieces by contemporary composer Dobrinka Tabakova that feature texts Byrd also set. The choir has performed this program a number of times on its Choral Pilgrimage, and the performances are well-oiled even by the group's usual standards. The Sixteen keeps this music close to its collective heart, and the choir's appealing warmth is on full display here. In addition to the Tabakova pieces, there is another pair of text settings by two composers; the Byrd and Jacob Clemens non Papa versions of "Tristitia et anxietas." They are strikingly different; the Byrd is much more introspective and interior. There is nothing too novel about this release. Most of the pieces are staples of choirs that perform Renaissance music. One can see what Christophers was trying to do with the Tabakova pieces, but they do not fully fit in with the rest of the music. However, the album could make a good place to start either with Byrd or The Sixteen, for it exemplifies the mixture of high standards and warm-hearted accessibility in the work of the latter. Like so many other albums by The Sixteen, this one landed on classical best-seller lists. The acoustics of the All Hallows' Church, Gospel Oak, London, are ideal for the repertory.
