Riding the wave of his first solo album, Tancade (InFiné, 2021), which was given the Qobuzissime award, Gaspar Claus’ cello continues its hypnotically minimalistic travels. The harrowing textures and heady melodic loops produce an instantly recognisable signature sound. The four tracks on this EP have been forged with the same craftsmanship that Claus is already well known for. His instrument stands alone, forming an entire orchestral programme completely unassisted. Melodious, percussive, and sometimes even downright human, his cello never ceases to amaze us. Claus has evidently had a lot of fun here, and this enjoyment is palpable on the two versions of the title track, '2359': one with a rather refined sound and another adorned with numerous electronic effects that are bound to get feet tapping. Listeners are even treated to a raucous post-rock finale with 'Recycled Future', complete with a cello that sounds damaged and weathered. One thing’s for sure: there are no limits to Claus’ imagination. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
