Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.

In 2013, the superb Push The Sky Away marked a kind of pinnacle for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. His prose became more and more literary: more mystical, but also more abstract. The increasingly dominant role of Warren Ellis in the musical work reached a sort of paroxysm here. Emotions were further heightened on the following record, Skeleton Tree, which came out three years later. With this record, Cave joined the ranks of artists who have worked in this oppressive, crippling vein. The Australian recorded the sixteenth Bad Seeds album following the tragic death of his son, Arthur, at the age of 15, who fell off a cliff after taking LSD... It is not possible to appreciate the slightest part of this work without revisiting this tragedy, even if some songs had been written before it occurred. Nick Cave lays himself bare here as never before. No barrier is left between the horror of what he has experienced and the words and notes on the record. It is a work of pared-down, unadorned revelation which is neither indecent, nor lurid. As he declaims at the start of the record, "With my voice, I am calling you". That's all...

At no point does the leader of The Bad Seeds use the traumatic context to put a knife to the listener's throat and oblige them to like the album out of pity. The long, crepuscular blues are a sort of beautiful, piercing requiem. For several years now, the singer had left behind pure storytelling, and his records brought together compositions which were closer to poetry, to sermons or elegy than to song. Here, he is thinking aloud; speaking to his son and calling to a heaven in which he has no faith, and maybe never did. By his side, the faithful Warren Ellis merges his ingenious instrumental flair with this moving and austere prose… On Skeleton Tree, Nick Cave is not looking for any kind of release, much less sending an S.O.S. The situation he is living through is what powers his creation. It is a powerful fuel, and the result is sure to count, when all is said and done, among his greatest works.
