Lyle Mays
Best known for a long musical relationship with Pat Metheny, Mays won prior acclaim for composing and notating an album for The North Texas State University Lab Band, which in 1975 became the first by a college band to get a Grammy nomination. That same year, he met Pat Metheny, beginning their association. Through the 70s and early 80s, Mays worked exclusively with Metheny. His background was in classic bop, and his occasional forays on acoustic piano reveal those roots, but it's his array of colors, sounds, textures, and electronic support on synthesizer that has earned him respect with Metheny. Mays has released recordings as a leader on ECM since the mid 80s.
