Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov is a regular at the Verbier Festival, where he performs both as a concert artist and as a chamber musician alongside internationally recognised musicians. In this new release on the Verbier Festival label on Deutsche Grammophon, Trifonov forms a trio with Ilya Gringolts (violin) and Truls Mørk for Beethoven’s Geistertrio and teams up with Leonidas Kavakos and Gautier Capuçon for Bedřich Smetana’s Trio in G minor.
Composed in 1808, Trio No. 5 in D major, Op. 70 No. 1 is one of Beethoven’s most original creations, paving the path to Romanticism. Its subtitle, Les Esprits, comes from a note written by the composer that suggests he was planning to work on an opera for Shakespeare’s Macbeth alongside playwright Heinrich von Collin. This play likely inspired certain aspects of this composition and echoes of it remain present in this new, slightly unusual version of Trio, especially in ‘Largo assai ed espressivo’.
Likely recorded on another evening and with a considerably different sonic outlook, the recording of Smetana’s Trio in G minor, Op. 15 amends a cruel injustice, elevating the work to become one of the best in the repertoire. This gem features three movements, each bursting with life thanks to the three vibrant performers on this album. © François Hudry/Qobuz
