Bruce James and Bella Black joined forces in 2011 in Austin, in their native Texas, to spread together the good word of soul music. A rather southern rock’n’gospel’n’blues soul music that draws from various traditions in Texas, New Orleans and even Memphis. In that regard, This Time brews a wide rainbow of influences, each more groovy than the next. With this fourth album, James & Black aren’t trying to revolutionise the genre, but rather to bring it alive in the oaky, organic and sensual vein of legends such as Al Green, Etta James, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, or even more surprisingly, the Beatles, revisiting their Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
