In 2016, during a Nordic religious music festival, German saxophonist Uwe Steinmetz came up with the idea of inviting his fellow German guitarist Arne Jansen, and the great Swedish bassist Anders Jormin to improvise around a few themes inspired by meditation. Immediately, the three musicians, with their very different styles and backgrounds, discovered a deep artistic connection, sparking a shared discourse, leading them to decide then and there to continue the adventure. This album, recorded live during the trio’s tour in the autumn of 2022, wonderfully reflects this shared sensitivity, which has only enriched and deepened over the years.
Their repertoire thoughtfully combines a few covers like the famous theme "La Peregrinacion" by Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez, from his Misa Criolla; the famous lullaby from Rosemary’s Baby, "Sleep Safe and Warm," composed by Krzysztof Komeda, with a series of original pieces by Steinmetz and Jansen. They are naturally deeply intimate and contemplative, reflecting their musical and spiritual journeys informed by their travels and encounters. The three men explore that constantly oscillating tension between jazz and classical music, with “He Who Counts the Stars”, evoking the influence of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, and Nordic or even extra-European folk traditions. Pieces like the North Korean lullaby "Red Flower" and "The Promise," inspired by time spent in India, explore a variety of cultural soundscapes and inner spaces, united by their intense lyrical depth. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
