Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, like John Lee Hooker, was one of the links between acoustic country/Delta blues and electrified urban blues. Hopkins had a relentless, driving guitar sound and an improvisational style with his lyrics--he combined the folk rambling troubadour tradition with the more urban Texas blues boogie style.

Hopkins was a significant influence on many folk, blues, and rock & roll performers in the '50s and '60s. FIRST RECORDINGS collects tracks from the mid-to-late 1940s in Houston and Los Angeles, and captures Hopkins' essence very well. The recording quality is excellent, Hopkins is in good voice (one could argue that he was a big influence, vocally and lyrically, on Chuck Berry), and his acoustic guitar playing is chillingly sharp and spare, sounding almost electric.
