With this fourth album, Earl Sweatshirt shows that his attraction to sampled sounds and diving deep into the musical catalogue of the 1970s are an endless source of inspiration. To satisfy this need for retro sounds, the members of the Odd Future collective have enlisted big names who know what they are doing. The Alchemist, in particular, who produced the excellent track Lye, whose main sample is borrowed from a 1974 song by the progressive rock band Riff Raff. It’s all about the vibe. Earl Sweatshirt's rap is monotonous, it's a trademark. The rapper lets the vibe settle, enhances it with his voice and doesn’t try to be direct. Like on Tabula Rosa, featuring Armand Hammer. SICK! sounds like a return to the past, especially when extracts from films or mystical tales are sampled, just like the superb track Vision, featuring Zelooperz, where the voices of La Mont Zeno Theatre ring out to give this track, and the album in general, a unique character. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
