Gospel music comes in many different forms, from the smooth contemporary R&B sounds of the Winans clan, to the friendly, down-home church music of Bill & Gloria Gaither. Some artists, however, choose to praise the Lord with as much gusto as they can muster, making a joyful noise in the most literal sense. J.J. Hairston and Youthful Praise are one of these artists, and RESTING ON HIS PROMISE showcases the ensemble at its most energetic and spirited. On tracks such as “Your Reign” and “Resting on his Promise,” Hairston and his choir sing with unbridled enthusiasm, backed by a band that plays with a raging rock energy and the chops of a jazz fusion group. Other highlights include the swaying ballad “Awesome Wonder” and the old-school roof-raiser “You Can Make It.”
