Let’s be clear. This album offers piano transcriptions mostly by other pianists and composers of works by Rachmaninov – since the title Rachmaninov rare piano transcriptions could be understood in different ways. The main body of works transcribed are Romances, i.e. the Russian counterpart of the German Lied, the English artsong and the French mélodie, songs with piano accompaniment. The public is widely used to those made by Liszt of Schubert Lieder, but indeed the Romances by Rachamninov as transcribed by Alexander Siloti (1863-1945, himself a Tchaikovsky pupil, like Rachmaninov), Alexandrer Schafer (1866-1914, transcriber for a great Russian publisher), Isaak Mikhnovsky (1914-1978, concert pianist, quite specialized in transcriptions of all kinds, among which opera fantasies and romance-rewriting), Dimitri Paperno (born 1929, a concert pianist who won the 1955 Chopin Competition in Warsaw), and Sergey Kursanov (1947- 2006, another pianist famous for his virtuoso transciptions), are a rare fare. The album also features a few of Rachmaninov’s own transcriptions of his romances, as well as – another rarity – his piano reduction (unearthed in 2002) of the Suite he wrote back in 1891 and proudly showed his beloved teacher Tchaikovsky. And who wouldn’t recognize in the first notes the accents of his very Second piano concerto? © SM/Qobuz
