This, the second of a pair of albums devoted to Schumann by the Kungsbacka Piano Trio, might seem to be a footnote to the first item, which contained the composer's first two piano trios. This one offers the nervous, worried Piano Trio No. 3 in G minor, Op. 110, along with a pair of quite obscure works, the Sechs Studien in kanonischer Form, Op. 56 ("Six Studies in Canonic Form"), and the Piano Quartet in C minor, the first full-length work written by the young Schumann, which remained unpublished until the 1970s. Yet each of these is a fascinating work in its own way, and the Kungsbacka Piano Trio uses them to delve deeply into Schumann's creative life. The Piano Quartet, which adds Lawrence Power on viola, was written in 1829. It doesn't have Schumann's distinctive adult voice, but it represented the composer's passionate immersion in the music of Beethoven, and the players get its over-the-top quality. The Piano Trio No. 3 starts at a high pitch of tension and never flags. Perhaps the most interesting of all, and the rarest, are the Sechs Studien, which are far from the dry academic exercises the title might suggest. Schumann wrote them to try to break out of a creative block, and they offer experiments in how to infuse polyphony into a variety of Romantic structures. Did Brahms know these little pieces? Unknown, but it wouldn't be a bit surprising if he did. The whole album bespeaks deep engagement with Schumann, and it is an essential find for lovers of the composer.
