On Purple Rose, Friend 'n Fellow -- lyricist/vocalist Constanze Friend and composer Thomas Fellow -- pay tribute to the spirit of the late Luther Allison with a selection of mostly original pieces, although there are a couple of rock covers in Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" and Steve Miller's "Fly like an Eagle." The ensemble's instrumentation is mostly acoustic -- highlighted by the organ and drum work of brothers Mathias and Alexander Bätzel, respectively -- and the music often roams the middle ground between jazz and blues.
