This release is a product of Australia's historical-performance scene, underrated in the West for purely logistical reasons. The main attraction is the voice of soprano Miriam Allan, a student of Emma Kirkby and Julianne Baird who has taken to heart their lessons about producing a distinctive timbre within chamber dimensions. In a group of songs by Henry Purcell her voice might even be a trifle too distinctive. Her voice has a slicing top register that sounds a bit like an English horn, but in lower ranges it blooms out into vibrato impressively; in these little songs, drawn from theater works, the two halves are pretty startling when the break between them is crossed. The presentation of these songs is ideal, however, with songs and instrumental works (performed by the new Australian group Ironwood) put together into a sequence that replicates the variety of a stage presentation. In the Handel sacred cantata Silete venti, HWV 242, and in the Trio Sonata in G minor, Op. 5/4, HWV 399, everybody shines, and Allan delivers beautifully controlled performances of the cantata's two sizable arias. The pairing of Purcell and Handel works here; when you perform Handel right after Purcell, the common awesome economy of the two composers becomes apparent. Recommended, especially for devotees of the Kirkby school. Clear sound from Australia's major ABC Classics label is a plus.
