British composer Owain Park, born in 1993, has already amassed wide experience in various aspects of contemporary British music as a young chorister, prize-winning organist, conductor, and leader of his own ensemble, the Gesualdo Six, in addition to his growing reputation as a composer. This collection of a cappella sacred music, in English and Latin, shows promise in the latter regard. The notes are by John Rutter, and indeed whether you like Rutter or not might be a good predictor as to how you'll feel about the music here. Park has Rutter's interest in a wide variety of classic texts and his knack for finding direct ways to put them across. But his range extends into areas little touched by Rutter. The Trinity Fauxbourdons (a Magnificat and Nunc dimittis) refer back to a medieval practice of parallel harmonizations, at first improvised, of chant melodies that echoed through two centuries of English polyphony. And sample the Phos hilaron, a setting of an ancient Greek text, translated into English, that is believed to be the first recorded Christian hymn. Here Park's inspiration is not Rutter but John Tavener, although, as Rutter points out, the varied deployment of the texts is Park's own. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge under Stephen Layton make sympathetic interpreters, and Hyperion's sound from the Trinity College Chapel is ideal.
