English pianist Peter Donohoe is still discreetly recording the complete Mozart sonatas for the British label SOMM. He remains faithful to the modern piano without ever attempting to imitate the fortepiano or adopt a ‘historically informed’ perspective. However, it should be noted that this vast body of work is recorded on the mellow sound of the Birmingham Conservatoire Bechstein grand piano.

In volume 6, the pianist is once again upfront about his preference for a frank and direct articulation whilst insisting on the expressive value of the Mozartian message. Deciding against a chronological presentation that might appear artificial, Peter Donohoe has chosen to present Sonatas No. 4 (E flat major), 14 (C minor) and 16 (C major).

The album also includes Fantasy in C minor, K. 475. The boldness and sense of freedom in this piece seem to respond to the prophetic nature of those composed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach during the same period, which had a lasting influence on Mozart, as well as Haydn and Beethoven. © François Hudry/Qobuz
