Tenor Matthew Polenzani's Wigmore Hall recital features an attractive variety of music: lieder by Schubert and three song cycles that are too rarely heard in concert: Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte, Britten's Seven sonnets of Michelangelo, and Hahn's Venezia. The diversity of the program showcases Polenzani's vocal versatility. In the Schubert and Beethoven, his voice comes across as sweet, focused, and not especially large (although he cuts loose at the climax of the Beethoven), in other words, not atypical for a lieder recitalist. In the Michelangelo Sonnets, though, he unleashes a hot-blooded Italianate extroversion. This is some of Britten's most overtly Romantic music, and Polenzani brings to it an operatic amplitude and passion hardly hinted at in the lieder, as is appropriate for these songs. In "Spirto ben nato" it's easy to hear the ringing intensity that has made him successful in Romantic opera. Hahn wrote the songs in Venetian dialect using the idiom of Italian popular song in 1901 and Polenzani's rounded tone and ardent delivery capture their poignant expressiveness. Pianist Julius Drake is a consummate accompanist, and he has played for a number of singers in the Wigmore Hall Live series. He is attentive to the subtleties of Polenzani's performances and brings a flexible musicality all the songs, but he is especially impressive in the Britten. The sound of the live recording is clean and warm, with a good sense of presence and excellent balance.
