Joachim Kühn's Kalimba is very much a co-op, featuring the leader-pianist (who is also heard briefly on his fiery alto sax), drummer Ramon Lopez, and Majid Bekkas on various string instruments and occasional vocals. The most intriguing sections are when the music is strongly influenced by Middle Eastern styles. There are occasional dry spots where the trio stays on one chord or in one pattern for a bit too long. Also, Bekkas' singing is an acquired taste. However much of the music is fresh and unpredictable, keeping one guessing as it straddles the boundaries between post-bop jazz and folk music influences from the countries (Germany, Morocco and Spain) of the musicians. No one plays it safe and the results are often invigorating. Worth checking out.
