A CD reissue of a 1991-released cassette-only live set, Big Youth's JAMMING IN THE HOUSE OF DREAD finds the pioneering toaster reworking classic toasts and skanks from his '70s heyday, from the testifying "I Pray Thee" to the gloriously politically incorrect Sly Stone homage "Every Nigger Is a Star."
The rhymes are quick and sly, covering topics ranging from sexual prowess to police corruption, sometimes even in the same song. The lengthy dubs give Big Youth (born Manley Buchanan in Kingston, Jamaica) plenty of room to work, and he takes full advantage of the opportunity. Every track is a winner, but the ominous "House of Dread" and the anthemic "Hit the Road Jack" are the best of this terrific lot.
