"I'm back, I feel like myself/ I was gone for a minute 'cause I went to get help," girl in red—Marie Ulven—sings on "I'm Back," the chamber-piano-pop opening track of I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!. The Norwegian singer-songwriter made big waves with her 2021 debut, If I Could Make It Go Quiet, with its songs about Gen Z love, queer identity and mental health struggles. Ulven and her bedroom-pop songs became symbolic, with the phrase "Do you listen to girl in red?" serving as coded language for young queer women on TikTok. People can radically change between their early and mid-twenties, and Ulven, now 25, is showing the world a happier version of herself after being diagnosed with, and getting treatment for, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and OCD. "I do feel like a totally different person, actually," she told DIY magazine. "I was really struggling with the words on this project. In the beginning, I wasn't writing from where I am in life. I was forcing Marie from 2020 onto something in 2023, and it wasn't working." The tongue-in-cheek title track is about how Ulven got her groove back (or, maybe, found it for the first time): "Got my Ray-Bans on and I'm rolling with the boys/ Having all this swagger was never a choice/ My big fat ego is making me say/ ‘This '99 Vintage has impeccable taste.'" It's in your face, with high-energy rumbling drums and a banjo-forward honky-tonk breakdown. The record also reads as Ulven reclaiming herself after a rocky relationship. "I toned myself down for you/ Volume 1, almost mute," goes "Too Much," loaded up with whiplash synth whooshes. The song is illustrative of how, like Billie Eilish, Ulven appreciates door-slam dynamics that travel from near-timid to outsize. It's also there on the "Phantom Pain," which veers from swoony fairytale strings and what sounds like birdsong—girl in red as Snow White—before totally warping, the speed going up and down, the repeated line "I'll love you if you let me" fuzzy and distorting, until Ulven audibly gulps for air. "New Love" is joyous, despite being about denial as an ex moves on; it recalls the brassy, chiming '80s synthpop of bands like Aztec Camera. "Ugly Side" plays out Ulven's regrets ("the people I love the most are the ones who get the worst of me") as New Wave piano pop, and "You Need Me Now?" is spiky dance-pop with a cooing assist from Sabrina Carpenter. And the tender ballad "Pick Me" returns to old topics, as Ulven pleads with an unrequited love, "Pick me over him/ Let the loser win." © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
