Forever Ended Yesterday takes modern rock to the brink and teeters knowingly on the edge. Treading the path of Taking Back Sunday and A Day to Remember, These Hearts craft a gutsy juxtaposition of post-hardcore and screamo. The North Dakota quintet toggles back and forth between youthful modern rock and dirt-pounding metal, often line by line. The mid-verse mood swings propel songs like "Apology Rejected" and "Live to the Point of Tears" along a trajectory that appeals to the angst of young teens but also makes it difficult to get to the "heart" of the band's beliefs. The cross is daring at best and disparate at worst, ultimately showing signs of potential but failing to convey a sound that sticks.
