The musical journey of Austrian lute player Bernard Hofstötter began with his violin studies in Vienna. Going on to earn a law degree, and to take an interest in contemporary music as well, he dove headfirst into the Baroque world by picking up the lute and the guitar. Frequently performing in both Europe and Japan, he plays repertoire that spans between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

Bernard Hofstötter has dedicated his latest recording to the little-known yet highly endearing Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750), one of the last great luth virtuosos during a period when the instrument was quickly falling out of fashion. Over 600 pieces for the instrument are attributed to him, including 109 sonatas. Royal chamberlain of August II the Strong in Dresden, he was friends with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, and even met his illustrious father.

The title of Bernard Hofstötter’s album, Fireworks, is based on one of the pieces it features– the Sonata No. 42 in A minor, which is actually a highly virtuosic suite whose name is perfectly suited to its six movements. The rest of the album falls along the same lines, with the beautiful Sonata No. 44 and two more meditative luth pieces, Capriccio and Sarabande. © François Hudry/Qobuz
