Perhaps lovers of the German-Austrian late Romantic era wish that composers of the time had written more chamber music. If so, this recording of a pair of quartets by Conrado del Campo from the Quatuor Diotima may be just the ticket. He was a Spaniard, but his work falls squarely into the Wagner-Strauss tradition. It is not that there is no trace of Spanish national content; hear the Basque melody in the viola in the second movement of the String Quartet No. 8 in E major ("On the death of the composer's mother"). However, the Iberian material is incidental, not fundamental to the music, and there are long stretches that could have come straight out of the German late 19th century. Another key inspiration for del Campo was Beethoven; there is a heroic strain in the two quartets here, deepened with late Romantic chromaticism and dense motivic work (hear the dark third movement of the String Quartet No. 8). The reputation of this composer suffered due to his association with the culture of Francoist Spain, but this isn't really fair; much of his output predated Franco's rule, and the two quartets here, although written 30 years apart, are not fundamentally different in style. There is no question of a "fascist" conservative style here, certainly no more so than there is with the eternally popular Joaquín Rodrigo. The music of del Campo is not unknown; The Brodsky Quartet recorded some of his quartets years ago, but it is hardly familiar, and the Quatuor Diotima has done a service by reviving these works in intense, precise readings. One of the few complaints here is the overbright sound quality at the Fundación Juan March in Madrid.
