On sale -50%Since the 1920, Castelnuovo-Tedesco found himself closely linked to the cello, as he would accompany many of the most famous soloists of the day at recitals. Casals, Feuermann, Földesy, Cassadó and in particular Piatigorsky. This latter commissioned our composer to write a concerto: a major work, which, like the cellist himself, was full of intense virtuosity, and showcased his talents. The first performance in 1935 was given by the dedicatee, conducted by Toscanini; and another great soloist, Brinton Averil Smith, plays it here, live in concert. To round off the programme, Smith helps us to rediscover several transcriptions signed by the same Castelnuovo-Tedesco, meant for Piatigorsky, for example great baritone arias written for cello, extracts from Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville, re-written here for cello and piano. "Re-written", because this is more than a simple transcription, but a re-composition, where virtuosity is distributed evenly between the cello and the piano. The two transcriptions after Ravel are for the same line-up, but they are much more unusual: Alborada del grazioso and La Vallée des cloches, but in this instance Castelnuovo-Tedesco has scrupulously respected the text and hasn't added a single note or harmony that didn't come from Ravel. And yet the result is completely new, and stunning. © SM/Qobuz
