Not to be confused with Anton Bruckner's three great masses of the 1860s, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor was composed in 1854 as a student work, and shows few of the features associated with his mature style. In fact, this mass hearkens back to earlier models, such as the Classical masses of Haydn and Mozart, and is accordingly compact and economical, in contrast with the monumental Missa Solemnis in D major of Beethoven. For this performance by Lukasz Borowicz with the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Bruckner's mass is interspersed with a Graduale by Robert Führer, an Offertorium by Joseph Eybler, and a Te Deum by Johann Baptist Gänsbacher, and supplemented with Bruckner's own Magnificat in B flat major and his Tantum ergo in B flat major. This programming choice makes the album fuller and gives the listener better value, but shows the mass to be a minor work that is best appreciated by specialists. Indeed, this is the premiere recording of the Urtext edition by Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs, for many years the co-editor of the Bruckner Gesamtausgabe (Bruckner Complete Edition), and known to fans for his contributions to the completion of Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 in D minor with Nicola Samale, John Phillips, and Giuseppe Mazzuca. This Accentus release was recorded live at the Konzerthaus Berlin, and offers remarkably clear sound for a concert setting.
