Three years after Breaking Out Of Hell, Airbourne return with a powerful manifesto created together with Dave Cobb’s expertise, the producer behind many quality albums by the likes of Rival Sons and Europe. The gentleman stamps the Australians’ Boneshaker with class and power. Recorded entirely on tape, the album has an organic sound which does complete justice to Airbourne’s raging compositions. The record sounds like a live performance and gives off a sense of immediacy and urgency, making tracks such as Boneshaker, Back Seat Boogie and Switchblade Angel feel incredibly sharp. Here, Airbourne continue to follow in their idols’ footsteps – those of AC/DC, The Poor, The Angels – and they do it with such class. The quartet also try out more elaborate compositions, taking us back to AC/DC’s dark ages from the Razors Edge and Ballbreaker period, with songs like Weapon of War. There’s nothing particularly surprising on this record, though the risk-taking recording method deserves applause. The tape recording’s characteristic compression goes to affirm Airbourne’s identity that bit more and the group prove that it’s still possible to make something new out of something old.
