There are better-known works by Malcolm Arnold than the ones on this album; think the English Dances and the score for The Bridge Over the River Kwai, but one would be hard-pressed to find a release that gave as rich an idea of his musical output. The pieces range from the early and lovely short tone poem Larch Trees, Op. 3, to the U.S. bicentennial-inspired Philharmonic Concerto, Op. 120, of 1976. Arnold is often classed as a musical conservative, but this is not really true, even though his work is predominantly tonal. For one thing, the influence of jazz (he was inspired to take up music by hearing Louis Armstrong) is pervasive, often subtle, and sometimes on the surface; this was not at all common in concert music during most of his career. Sample the Chacony finale of the Divertimento No. 2. Another modern feature is Arnold's brilliant and often completely original orchestration, such as in the pounding percussion of the Philharmonic Concerto. Arnold used merrie-olde-England music, it is true, but only as one flavor in a wider canvas. Try The Padstow Lifeboat, Op. 94a, originally written for brass band and marking, believe it or not, the dedication of a new lifeboat; there is a remarkably dark central passage depicting the storm that sank the old one. The performances by the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba, who is emerging as a fine specialist in Arnold and his contemporaries, are splendid, and there is a masterful performance of the Clarinet Concerto No. 1, Op. 20, by Michael Collins. A thoroughly satisfying Arnold release.
