Over the last fifteen years, saxophonist James Brandon Lewis has established himself as one of the leading figures in the new free music scene. Among his many projects, the quartet he formed in the 2020s stands out as perhaps his most overtly experimental—and paradoxically, his most accessible. Rooted in a deeply lyrical, post-Coltranian aesthetic, the group embraces a bold yet inviting approach to improvisation and form.

In his latest release, Lewis remains true to the conceptual framework he calls "Molecular Systematic Music," while also drawing on biological processes to shape the ensemble's interactions and improvisational structures. Once again, the powerhouse lineup of Aruán Ortiz on piano, Brad Jones on double bass, and Chad Taylor on drums is featured, and continues on from a lineage of celebrated works, including Molecular, Code of Being, MSM Molecular Systematic Music Live, and Transfiguration, the latter of which is entirely composed of ballads. With his rich, multidimensional tone, at once tender, tense and rough, James Brandon Lewis explores the shifting lines between tradition and modernity, crafting original compositions of remarkable melodic strength. The group pay homage in equal measure to the great saxophonist David S. Ware ("Ware") and the transcendental jazz of Alice Coltrane ("Even the Sparrow") as to the East Asian influences of the free and meditative improvisations of Charles Lloyd ("Remember Rosalind"). Abstraction is Deliverance firmly asserts  Lewis's place at the forefront of contemporary jazz, delivering music that feels deeply authentic, driven by a fluid rhythm section and all the while interwoven with Ortiz’s defiant piano harmonies. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
