In a move to beat bootleggers to the punch, Pearl Jam decided to release each of their 2000 American concert performances in a series of inexpensive double-CD sets. The August 30th concert recorded in Boston, MA, creeps to a dynamic start with the opening song, the heart-wrenching final track from their 1991 debut, Ten. Energetic versions of "Animal" and "Given to Fly" highlight the first set, along with an improvisational song which seems to be still under construction. Hardcore fans were treated to a stripped-down version of the "Jeremy" B-side, "Footsteps," complete with Vedder's Neil Young-inspired harmonica flourishes. "Daughter" was another interesting performance, as lead singer Eddie Vedder spent a portion of the song trading sections of Sonic Youth's "Androgynous Mind" with the audience. The second set warms up with "Betterman" and blazes through "Go," which consistently sounds better live than on the original studio recording. The show wraps up with the introspective "Nothingman," the grunge staple "State of Love and Trust," and Eddie Vedder's precious ukulele-only "Soon Forget" (humorously interrupted by Vedder's "you were clapping out of time, and I was out of tune, so we're even" before starting the song again). A pair of covers, J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers' "Last Kiss" and their adopted "Rockin' in the Free World" finish the evening in a high-energy flourish. This show is a fine supplement to the previous night's show (which was only fractionally better) and would find a happy home in any Pearl Jam fan's collection.
