The release of this previously unknown music was a welcome event in 2001. The great trumpeter Woody Shaw is heard really stretching out on three group originals and "What Is This Thing Called Love"; the renditions clock in between 11 minutes and 48 seconds and 17 minutes and five seconds. Shaw is joined by two versions of his regular quintet of the period, with Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano for "Isabel the Liberator"; trombonist Steve Turre on the other three selections; and the rhythm section of pianist Larry Willis, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Victor Lewis. Shaw is heard throughout in top-form, pushing himself and coming up with advanced ideas that remind listeners how great a trumpeter he was. Highly recommended, as was Live, Vol. 1.
